RECS 2011 - Day 1

Elizabeth Petrie (Utah State University)

June 6th - The first day of RECS offered a full day of CCS policy and business lectures and discussions as well as a preview of the field sites the RECS group will visit. RECS Founder and Director, Pamela Tomski set the stage with a special thanks to the U.S. DOE and NETL for RECS sponsorship and Southern Company and SECARB-Ed for their partnership with EnTech Strategies. She also provided background on the RECS program and network, founded in 2004 as the premier U.S. CCS education and training experience with over 200 alumni and faculty, many who contribute as the nation’s leaders in advancing CCS solutions to global climate change and opportunities to enhance energy security through enhanced oil recovery (EOR) with carbon storage.

Mike Moore (BlueSource / NACCSA) and Mary Kang (Princeton University)

Dr. Richard Esposito (Southern Company) and Kim Sams (SECARB) provided regional highlights of CCS in the southeast and previewed field sites that offer RECS a unique platform from which to provide hands-on CCS field experiences. CCS policy and business talks were given by Fred Eames (Hunton & Williams / CCS Alliance), Sarah Wade (Wade LLC) and long-time RECS faculty Mike Moore (BlueSource / NACCSA). After an introduction to the Stabilization Wedges Game by one of the game’s originators, Dr. Roberta Hotinski (Princeton University), participants split into groups for discussion on the optimal strategy to mitigate carbon emissions through 2050 using existing technologies. Each group presented their solutions, which sparked a thoughtful debate among participants and faculty. (All RECS 2011 presentations may be found on the RECS web Program page.)

In the evening, Southern Company hosted a reception at Samford University’s Planetarium catered by the fabulous Food Studio B.  After a little mingling, the group enjoyed a large-screen viewing of “How the Earth Was Made.” It was an inspiring end to the first intense day of RECS.
